What is Art? Campaign

Recently in May I worked with the Arts Council of Kanawha County in West Virginia taking specific photographs for the launch of their, What is Art? Campaign. These three photographs are currently hanging around town with others, promoting new and fresh ideas in the community of what art is to them. This project was in collaboration with the fabulous Megan Bullock.

My sister, Caitlin, and I ventured into the deep woods behind our house while I was home in West Virginia this past weekend for work/meetings/shoots/etc. (Excited to share with you soon the projects going on that will be unveiled in the next few weeks!) We didn’t plan on these photographs being taken… and they are some of my favorites as of late. She is so beautiful. A rock to me.

I’ve known this girl for many years — her family has been dear to mine. What a privilege it was to take her photographs at this turning point in her life. She is a lover of languages, and almost tri-lingal. Having an afternoon with her inspired me to continue on in my own learning of languages.

Now, a few of my personal favorites from our shoot in March.

Courtney is fabulous. Her Mom, Donna, came along to our shoot and I enjoyed our afternoon together. They’re neighbors of my family back home and am thrilled to get to know them! Courtney is a senior at Nitro High School (where my parents graduated from!) and is a fantastic tumbler, I hear. She knows what she likes, and I like that about her.

Yes, indeed, this is my beloved family. Late in the evening we had our first family photo shoot since 2001. Thanks to my self-timer, darling Grandma and friend Brittany, we got photos in before it was too dark : ) Christmas family cards, here we come!

Also note that most of these are outtakes… because we simply can’t take a serious photo together. And that’s okay by me.

It is also my parents 30th wedding anniversary this month. So, as my gift, they received photos from me. By taking their portraits, I learned more about myself and about who they were, how they mesh perfectly… how seasoned they are. What a gift. I’ve taken so many portraits of new couples — and that fresh, beautiful romance is captured on film. This, this was different. Seasoned, selfless, beautiful… love.
