New York, New York.

Oh, New York City. Time spent with you is inspiring and invigorating.
My traveling companion and confidant, Brittany Schenk (flyredkite.com) and I spent time throughout the city meeting with new and old friends alike, and continued to inspire each other further in our own work and the collaborative work to come.

[ let's just say, this summer has been the summer of building and integrating art forms ]

We met with the beautiful Lauren Masser, a friend I met years ago shooting a wedding and continued relationship with my time in Cape Town in 2008. We reunited in the city where she currently resides, and brainstormed new ideas with her and relaxed with a crisp Rose in the afternoons.

I love when time crosses with another new and dear friend, Ally Powell (ravynart.com). We connected late June in Virginia, and met again toward the end of our trip. She is lovely, and I’m glad to call her a fellow artist and collaborative soul.

Looking forward to spending more time in the near future here, and what it holds for us.

Here are some photographs of our time in the city.

Brittany Schenk – New York

A few highlights of my darling and dear friend, Brittany (of Redkite Photo), as we traveled together this July in New York City. We have been dreaming and scheming together for quite sometime, and this trip brought inspiration, challenge and encouragement to us. So many exciting things to share in the coming months with you – these are a few favorites of mine. Enjoy : )

Cat Anderson // Cleveland, OH

Jul. × ’11

Cleveland has the most perfect industrial warehouse locations. On Sunday, Cat and my two assistants, Caitlin (sister) and my friend Cameron, set out to this location in the hot evening around 7 o’clock. Cat needed some modeling and headshots for her portfolio, and the photographs we created are some of my favorites to date.

A little behind the scenes shot captured by Caitlin… Cameron is bouncing the natural light from the pinhole in the corner with the silver side of my reflector.

Gary Greene

Wise, old soul – dear to my heart. We have shared years of stories and experiences together.
He and his wife, Pat, and been artistic mentors to me over the years…
I was able early one Wednesday morning to take a short hike with him at 5:30AM -
and witness his daily offering as a watercolorist.
Love you, Gary + Pat.

Grace Biggs

A sister to me. We had a free afternoon and drove out into Mt. Jackson.
Never a lack of a beautiful place to photograph… polaroids on the way.

Thanks to this lady, we snuck away in an evening talk at Shrine Mont CFO – where she is the registar – to spend some time together. She is also a photographer, and we learned bits and pieces from each other. One of the most beautiful mothers I know.

Braelyn

May. × ’11

Braelyn and I have been creating photographs together for the past two weeks. Some for specific projects and some, just for the pure joy of it. It all started when I photographed her one afternoon in the fog in a little yellow coat. She has such a gift becoming the essence of the characters we are needing to portray, and with her (and mine) dance background, we’re able to work together in ways not possible with other models. The photographs below are mostly from my book cover shoot for, ‘As the Spark Flies Upward’ (Jenna-Clare Allen) to be released summer 2011. She nailed it. You’ll be seeing the brilliant design work of Heidi Rolf and a combination my work very soon – I’m quite excited. Such a joy to collaborate with local artists and continue to build community and friends along the way. It really is what it’s all about. Enjoy, friends.

Please do take the time to experience for yourself As the Spark Flies Upward – a beautiful, heart-wrenching southern novel by Jenna-Clare Allen. It has been a pleasure working with her, being in her home and getting to know her family. Support this work on Kickstarter!
